Google Business Profile call tracking, after call history

Google turned off call history in 2024, and the Calls number that replaced it counts taps on a button. Here is what it does and does not tell you, from Google's own help pages, and a simple way to count your Google calls each month.

Google Business Profile no longer keeps a call history. Google turned it off on July 31, 2024, and the download of old records ended on August 30, 2024, so that history is gone. What remains is the Calls number under Performance, which counts taps on your call button, not answered calls. Here is how to count Google calls properly now.

If your phone rings from your Google listing, you want to know two things: how many calls came from it, and whether anyone picked up. Google now answers only part of the first question. The rest comes from your own phone records and a few habits that take no software.

What happened to Google Business Profile call history?

Google retired the feature along with chat. Its help page says: "As of July 31, 2024, the chat and call history features are no longer available in your Business Profile." It added that records could be downloaded through Google Takeout "until August 30, 2024." That window has closed, and the page gives no other way to get the history back.

What does the Calls number count?

In your profile's Performance report, Google defines Calls as "The number of times a customer clicked on the call button on your Business Profile." You can pick a time period for the report, including a custom date range.

Read that definition closely. A tap on the button is counted whether or not the call connects, and whether or not you answer. It does not tell you:

  • how many of those calls you answered, and how many went to voicemail;
  • who called, or what they wanted;
  • calls from people who read your number on the listing and dialed it by hand, or saved it earlier.

So the Calls number is a count of interest, not of conversations. It is still worth tracking month to month, because it moves when your listing gets seen more or less.

How to count calls from your Google listing now

None of this takes paid software.

  1. Write down Google's Calls number for last month. Open your profile, go to Performance, set the date range to the full month and note Calls. Do it the same way every month so the numbers line up.
  2. Pull your carrier's call log for the same dates. Count the incoming calls and how many you answered. If your Calls number is a big share of your incoming calls, your listing is doing a lot of the work, and some of the calls you missed were people who found you on Google.
  3. Ask callers how they found you. One line at the end of the call: "How did you hear about us?" Mark it on the ticket. Over a month you will see how many say "Google" or "Maps." This is the only step that tells you about callers who dialed by hand.
  4. Tag the website link on your profile. Add campaign tags to the website address on your listing, so visits from it show up as their own source in Google Analytics instead of mixed in with other Google traffic. Google's own guide says to always use utm_source, utm_medium and utm_campaign, for example ?utm_source=google&utm_medium=organic&utm_campaign=gbp on the end of your address.
  5. Compare month to month, not day to day. Small numbers jump around. Look for a direction over three months.

Can you use a call tracking number on Google Business Profile?

Google's guidelines page does not mention call tracking numbers at all. What it does say: "Provide a phone number that connects to your individual business location," "The phone number must be under the direct control of the business," and "Use a local phone number instead of a central call center helpline number whenever possible." It also says not to give numbers "that redirect or 'refer' users to landing pages or phone numbers other than those of the actual business." Separately, Google lets you add up to 2 more phone numbers besides your primary one.

If you try a tracking number, make sure it is yours, rings your business and nobody else, and that your main number is still on the profile. Some marketing companies recommend a particular setup; that advice is theirs, not Google's, so read Google's own page first.

Why is my phone number or call button not showing?

Google's help pages point to three things to check.

  • The number is hidden. Google lets you hide your phone number. To check, open your Business Profile, select More, then Business Profile settings, then Advanced settings. Under "Phone number," make sure "Don't show" is off.
  • An edit is still under review. Google says edits "usually take up to 10 minutes to review, but sometimes it can take up to 30 days," and that it "might not approve changes if it can't confirm its accuracy."
  • The number was never entered, or was entered wrong. Go to your profile, select Edit profile, then Contact, and next to "Phone number" select Edit. Google accepts mobile or landline numbers, but not fax numbers.

Are calls about my Google listing a scam?

They can be. Google's own page on fraudulent calls says that when Google does call a business, for example to update its hours, "You won't be asked to sign up for a service, pay money, or give personal info." A caller who wants payment to "verify" or protect your listing is not following Google's script. In the U.S., Google's page points to the Federal Trade Commission at donotcall.gov and ReportFraud.ftc.gov for reporting.

What to do about the Google calls you miss

Once steps 1 and 2 are running, you will know roughly how many people tapped call on your listing and how many calls went unanswered. Those callers found you on their own, without an ad. A few ways to stop losing them:

  • Send the calls you miss somewhere. Conditional call forwarding moves an unanswered call to a cell, a person or an agent without changing the number on your listing. Our forwarding codes by carrier come from each carrier's own page.
  • Put a value on them. Our missed-calls calculator turns a count of missed calls into dollars, using your own ticket size.
  • Keep the listing itself in shape. Hours, categories and photos are what get the call button tapped in the first place. Our Forge Sites plans include Google Business Profile management and local SEO, if you would rather not do it yourself.

We also run an AI agent that answers the calls you send it, on a new number or your forwarded main line, and records each one. It is an AI and says so if asked. The Forge Voice page explains how it works. If you want links from other sites pointing at your listing and website, we wrote about building backlinks without buying them.

Questions owners ask about Google calls

Can I still see call history in Google Business Profile?

No. Google says the chat and call history features stopped being available on July 31, 2024, and records could be downloaded through Google Takeout until August 30, 2024. That download has ended.

What does Calls mean in Google Business Profile Performance?

Google defines it as the number of times a customer clicked the call button on your Business Profile. It counts taps, so it includes calls you did not answer and leaves out people who dialed your number by hand.

How do I track calls from my Google Business Profile?

Note the Calls number for each month, compare it with your carrier's call log for the same dates, ask callers how they found you, and add campaign tags to the website link on your profile so those visits show separately in Google Analytics.

Why is my phone number not showing on Google?

Check that the Don't show setting under Advanced settings is off, that your phone number is entered under Edit profile, then Contact, and whether an edit is still under review. Google says reviews usually take up to 10 minutes but can take up to 30 days.
